Plaisir D’Amour x2

I was in Goldenbridge at the time this recording was made in France in 1966 by Joan Baez. There was very little access to television at that time in the institution. However, it was one of the favourite songs of the folk-group that Sr. Ellen had at St. Louise’s Hostel, Medway St. London in the mid 70s. This version is an adaption of Plaisir D’Amour. I get all lachrymose upon listening to it. Have been a life-long fan of Joan Baez’s music.

This is the shorter version that Joan sings.

The joys of love are but a moment long
The pain of love endures the whole life long

Your eyes kissed mine, I saw the love in them shine
You brought me heaven right there when your eyes kissed mine

My love loves me, a world of wonder I see
A rainbow shines through my window; my love loves me

And now he’s gone like a dream that fades in the dawn
But the words stay locked in my heartstrings; my love loves me

Nána Mouskouri sings the longer version. Nána has such purity in her voice. I had many records in the past by this very talented singer, who sang in so many languages that I adored learning to imitate.

Lyrics [longer version]

Je t’aimerai me répétait Sylvie.
L’eau coule encore.

The pleasure of love lasts only a moment
The grief of love lasts a lifetime.

I gave up everything for ungrateful Sylvia,
She is leaving me for another lover.

The pleasure of love lasts only a moment,
The grief of love lasts a lifetime.

“As long as this water will run gently
Towards this brook which borders the meadow,

I will love you”, Sylvia told me repeatedly.
The water still runs, but she has changed.

The pleasure of love lasts only a moment,
The grief of love lasts a lifetime.
